Card Grading in 2026: PSA Dominance, Narrowing Premiums, and the Centering Problem

PSA holds 67% of the grading market and now owns BGS and SGC. Meanwhile, TCG submissions have surpassed sports cards, and the PSA premium over CGC is shrinking fast.

PSA Continues to Lead the Pack

As we move through 2026, the card grading landscape continues to evolve, but one thing remains constant: PSA holds a commanding lead with approximately 67% market share of all graded cards. The gap between PSA and its competitors has only widened following the blockbuster acquisition of Beckett by PSA parent company Collectors in December 2025.

That acquisition means three of the four major grading companies — PSA, BGS, and SGC — now operate under the same corporate umbrella. Only CGC remains as a fully independent alternative, raising important questions about competition and pricing in the grading space.

What Graded Cards Are Worth in 2026

The premium that PSA-graded cards command remains significant but varies by category:

  • Modern cards: PSA 10s sell for 10-20% more than equivalent BGS 9.5s across most categories
  • Vintage cards: BGS Black Label 10s can actually sell for 115-140% of PSA 10 prices, reflecting the extreme difficulty of achieving a perfect BGS grade on older cards
  • Pokemon cards: The PSA premium over CGC has narrowed dramatically, dropping from 20-25% two years ago to just 5-10% today

TCG Submissions Outpace Sports Cards

One of the most notable trends in 2026 is that TCG submissions now account for more than twice the volume of all major sports cards combined. Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, and Yu-Gi-Oh cards are flooding grading company queues, driven by younger collectors who grew up with these games and are now entering the hobby with serious purchasing power.

This shift has implications for turnaround times and pricing. Grading companies have had to adjust their workflows and staffing to accommodate the different handling requirements of trading cards versus traditional sports cards.

Centering Remains the Grade Killer

Across all three major grading companies, centering continues to be the number one grade-limiting factor. Cards that would otherwise earn perfect marks for corners, edges, and surface are frequently downgraded due to off-center printing. This is particularly common in Pokemon and Japanese-printed cards, where quality control tolerances differ from American printing facilities.

Before submitting cards for grading, invest in a good centering tool or app. Knowing your card measurements ahead of time can save you hundreds of dollars in grading fees on cards that will not make the grade.

Should You Grade Your Cards?

With PSA raising prices in February 2026, the cost-benefit calculation for grading has shifted. For most modern cards valued under \$50 raw, the grading fee may not be justified unless you are confident in a PSA 10 or BGS Black Label result. Focus your grading submissions on high-value cards where the graded premium will significantly exceed the cost of the service.
