10 Questions to Ask a Card Shop Before You Buy
The ten questions every collector should ask before spending money at a local card shop — from provenance to negotiation to grading advice.
Walking into a card shop for the first time can feel intimidating, especially if you're about to spend real money. The good news: shop owners want serious buyers, and they respect people who ask smart questions. Asking the right things up front helps you avoid bad purchases, identify shops worth coming back to, and build relationships that pay off for years. Here are the ten questions every collector should have ready.
1. "Where did this card come from?"
Provenance matters — especially on higher-value cards. A shop that bought a card from a walk-in estate sale has a different story than one that picked it up at a show or bought it graded from a collector. You're not cross-examining the owner; you're just showing you care about the card's history. Good shops will happily tell you. Shops that dodge the question or get defensive are telling you something else.
2. "Can I see it out of the case?"
For raw (ungraded) cards, looking through a display case under fluorescent lighting tells you almost nothing. Ask politely if you can examine the card in hand. Any reputable shop will pull it out, usually in a penny sleeve or toploader. Rotate it under the light, check all four corners, look for centering, whitening on edges, surface scratches, and print defects. If a shop refuses — walk away.
3. "Is this price firm, or is there room to move?"
Card shop prices are almost always negotiable, especially on singles over $50. Not aggressively — shops have margins to protect — but a polite "is this your best price?" or "would you take [X]?" is completely standard. The worst they'll say is no. On multi-card purchases the room gets bigger; buying three cards at once often opens a bundle discount.
4. "What's your return policy on raw cards?"
Almost no shops accept returns on raw singles once they leave the store — the risk of swap is too high. Knowing this up front matters. It means you need to be sure before you buy. For graded cards, some shops will accept returns if the slab hasn't been cracked and the return is quick. Ask before, not after.
5. "Do you buy cards, and how does your buy process work?"
Even if you're not selling today, this tells you a lot. A shop that buys collections is deeply plugged into the local hobby and will have better, fresher inventory than one that only sells product off distributor invoices. Ask what they pay — typically 50–70% of market value for desirable singles. Shops that say "we don't buy" are usually distributor-only operations with limited singles selection.
6. "When do you get your new product in?"
New booster boxes and wax sell out fast at most shops, especially for hot Pokemon and sports sets. Asking about restock timing gets you on the right day for first pick. Many shops have a regular shipment day — Tuesdays and Thursdays are common. Some shops let regulars call dibs on limited product before it hits the shelves; you can't get on that list without asking.
7. "Do you run any events or leagues?"
Shops that run Friday Night Magic, Pokemon leagues, or weekend tournaments are community hubs. Even if you don't play competitively, event nights are where you'll meet trading partners, learn about upcoming shows, and hear about local collections for sale. Event shops are almost always better shops. No events usually means no community.
8. "What's the best-selling stuff right now?"
This is an underrated question. It signals you're interested in the market, and the answer tells you what the shop's customer base actually cares about. A shop that says "sports cards across the board, but mostly Pokemon for kids and vintage baseball for older guys" is giving you an honest read on their ecosystem. A shop that can't answer isn't paying attention.
9. "Is this card graded-worthy?"
If you're looking at a raw card with real value, ask the shop owner's honest opinion on whether it would grade well. Experienced owners can eyeball a card and give you a ballpark — "I'd say PSA 8, maybe a 9 if you're lucky." 10. "What should I know that I haven't asked?"
This is the magic question. It invites the shop owner to share context you wouldn't have thought to request — maybe this set has centering issues on the autos, maybe this player's rookie is about to have a major release, maybe they have something behind the counter they'd show you if you were serious. Good shop owners love this question because it means you're open to learning.
Building the Relationship
Asking good questions is the first step; coming back is the second. Shop owners remember collectors who showed genuine interest, treated them with respect, and followed up. Over time, those collectors get first looks at new buys, better pricing, holds on limited product, and introductions to other collectors. That relationship is the real value of a local card shop — it's not something you can get online.
